The educational visit on Adult Education in the context of the Museum of modern and contemporary art was carried out at the KMSKA Museum in Flanders. We were welcomed by Sophie and Dennise, who are involved in the preparation and implementation of public engagement programmes. The museum was particularly inspiring for us, who are preparing to work in the new premises, having gone through an 11-year renovation, preparing new installations and a rich set of accompanying programmes, which were relaunched last year. Inside the building, which blends late 19th-century and modern architecture, we also got a glimpse behind the scenes: the depositories, the libraries and the dining room, where around 100 staff meet. Dennise presented us with an exhibition of works from their extensive collection, which is of a very high quality and innovative, enriched with interpretative material: texts for the different visitor structures, ICT material (3D simulation of Rubens' studio, audio-video material of interpretations of the works of art by individuals from different target groups (children, adolescents, elderly, professionals, etc.), The Ten (ten installations relating to the themes included in the exhibition), etc. The temporary exhibition also provided didactic material for independent visits by younger people. We followed a variety of guided tours for adults and children. We had the opportunity to observe the synergy created through art during an intergenerational workshop between the elderly from the retirement home and the young people from the youth organisation. On Thursday 28 March, from 20:00-22:00, we followed the programme when the museum has extended opening hours (concert, guided tours). We also presented the UGM and our educational programmes to the staff of the Education Department. We are very proud that they were able to find in our presentation ideas to complement their work. In addition to KMSKE, we were welcomed at two other museums. At FOMU we attended the opening event of the exhibition RE/SISTERS - A Lens on Gender and Ecology. At M HKA we were introduced to the Museum of Contemporary Art and the current exhibition Piet, which also designs and implements educational programmes for different target groups.

Visiting the International Forum ''Sculpture and Climate Emergancy'' in Málaga, Spain
5 October–7 October 2023
photo: UGM archive

Curator Andreja Borin and specialized assistant Simona Šuc attended the XV. Reactivating Unused Urban Spaces Through Architecture and Arts 2024–2028

We are proud to announce the launch of the new European cooperation project reCITYing. Started in January of this year, the project will unfold throughout the next 48 months with an aim to promote the short-term action to leverage social participation and co-creation for the regeneration of unused, closed or private urban spaces and buildings into artistic laboratories as new cultural incubators, open to the city.

For philosopher and sociologist Henri Lefebvre, appropriation is a function of lived space, where the imagination seeks to change it. Lived space is a place of passion where the user/community encounters resistance, which inevitably involves conscious action and struggle. How then can temporary reuse practices foster processes of urban reappropriation and regeneration strategies of residual spaces in the city? Against this backdrop, reCITYing has the ambition to create a platform for knowledge creation and exchange of experiences on temporary reuse practices to define co-creation of spaces in a European perspective and is aimed at young creatives and professionals from the fields of architecture, design and arts, policy makers and local social enterprises.

The general structure of the project is based on a recursive set of thematic actions (Creative Workshops, Space Installations, Itinerant Space Performances), enriched by moments of capacity building and audience engagement leveraging the role of architecture as a stage for arts and co-creation with the aim of improving social inclusion and accessibility to neglected spaces in the city.

The project fosters practical knowledge and professional skills in recycling architecture in 4 partner and 4 host cities (Genoa-Lublin, Barcelona-Umea, Hannover-Tallin, Maribor-Timișoara) by consolidating a common logical framework and a roadmap for Temporary Reuse approach.

reCITYing partner consortium consists of the project leader Università degli studi di Genova (Italy) and Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (Spain), Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany), UGM | Maribor Art Gallery (Slovenia) and Association Champ Libre (France).

reCITYing project will also establish a bionomy dialogue between: Genoa–Lublin (UNIGE, Genoa Municipality, Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti + Lublin Municipality, TU Lublin); Barcelona–Umea (IAAC Barcelona, Parc Agrari del Baix de Llobregat + Umea Municipality); Hannover–Tallinn (Hannover MusikZentrum + Tallinn Academy of Arts); Maribor–Timișoara (UGM | Maribor Art Gallery + Municipality of Maribor, BETA Timișoara Architecture Biennale) and Montpellier as international multiplier event (Champ Libre, ENSAM Montpellier + Montpellier Municipality, AMO Architecture Maître d’Ouvrage Med Occitanie).

Co-funded by the European Union. In what ways can engagement with works of art affect people in emotional ways so as to become more compassionate towards nature and non-human beings and thus affected in morally positive ways?

The EMPACT project adopts an innovative approach in advocating for climate crisis, based on the idea that the concept of empathy can shed new light on how we understand and embody sustainability in the arts. The project lies on two interconnected pillars: (i) the facilitation of artists to produce, through sustainable practices, art that fosters an empathic stance towards non-human beings and nature, and thus effectively incorporate the concept of sustainability in their artistic production; (ii) the necessity for artists and cultural workers to become themselves empathic and resilient individuals in order to deal with the post-pandemic social and economic crisis.

Key role players, including, artists, sustainability experts, philosophers and social scientists will engage in effective dialogue to explore the importance of empathy as a central means to encourage individual sustainability orientations and broader environmental sustainability, with the ultimate action of tackling climate change.

From this, EMPACT will deliver a holistic, well-designed, series of activities and tools that will provide artists and cultural players with the knowledge and tools to address complex scientific and social conflicts generated by climate change, namely:
• A training program on Empathy & Sustainability pathways for arts that will be developed by relevant experts, and will be tested and delivered during the project with artists from all partner countries through landmark and experiential workshops.
• An artistic program that involves co-operation and creation of innovative art-projects, comprising the creation / curation of 2 contemporary art exhibitions that address sustainability within an empathic and creative context.
• A series of art/artist orientated projects, including, a residency program offering artists the opportunity to work with international collaborators and present their work to the public; socially-engaged art interventions, to collaborate with the organization and local people, communities and/or art students to initiate and implement a socially engaged art intervention, tackling specific problems related to sustainability and the promotion of circular economy practices; and, collaborative interdisciplinary artistic projects.
• The development of the Sustainable Circular Economy (SuCiE) Platform to enable artists and companies to post and trade waste, spare or unneeded material with other artists cost effectively.

EMPACT is led by the Cyprus University of Technology and scientifically coordinated by Assistant Professors Efi Kyprianidou and Yannis Christidis (Department of Fine Arts). The above measures will be implemented with the collaboration of nine European partners – Cyprus University of Technology (Ciper), id22: Institute for Creative Sustainability (Nemčija), Fondazione Lamberto Puggelli (Italija), Espacio Rojo (Španija), National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (Bolgarija), Nature, Art & Habitat (Italija), Wisefour (Ciper), Vorres Museum (Grčija) and UGM | Maribor Art Gallery (Slovenia) – offering diverse experiences and know-how, which represent a broad, balanced, and targeted geographical area.

The EMPACT project is funded by the European Union. [content] =>
Modern UGM21 Exhibition Center on Rotovški trg

»At the Maribor Art Gallery, we were happy to approach the Rotovž Center project, as it offered us the opportunity to connect various activities in the field of culture in a completely new way. We are convinced that the people of Maribor will have an exceptional experience provided through the synergy of various actors in the Rotovž Center - the city library, a modern exhibition center, art cinema; and therefore receive more than an individual institution could offer. We were especially impressed by the move of the mayor and the city leadership to place culture in the city center itself, as it symbolically indicates the role that culture plays in the development of our city.

Maribor will finally acquire the first purpose-built art exhibition. With professional conditions, we will be able to host international and nationally relevant exhibitions and address the general public with them. The modern concept of the exhibition will enable us to offer better support to the Maribor art scene, and we will also expand our activities in areas such as design, photography and film, which the public rightly expects from the central institution for visual culture in northeastern Slovenia.

The exhibition space of the Maribor Art Gallery called UGM21 will be located in the Rotovž Center complex; the name indicates the orientation of the exhibition center towards modern principles of exhibition. In the meantime, the museum contents will be given suitable premises at the existing location on Strossmayer Street. These premises will also need to be renovated, and IOM's serious intention can be seen in the renovations of the roof and façade that have already been completed.

We at UGM are very much looking forward to the project, and above all want the public to be invited to the first exhibition as soon as possible, and with that start the creative process in Rotovž Center."
- Breda Kolar Sluga, director of the Maribor Art Gallery
[richtext] => 1 [template] => 4 [menuindex] => 0 [searchable] => 1 [cacheable] => 1 [createdby] => 1 [createdon] => 1611140624 [editedby] => 1 [editedon] => 1611141376 [deleted] => 0 [deletedon] => 0 [deletedby] => 0 [publishedon] => 1609767246 [publishedby] => 1 [menutitle] => [content_dispo] => 0 [hidemenu] => 0 [class_key] => MODX\Revolution\modDocument [context_key] => web-en [content_type] => 1 [uri] => events/news/modern-ugm21-exhibition-center-on-rotovski-trg-4106/ [uri_override] => 0 [hide_children_in_tree] => 0 [show_in_tree] => 0 [properties] => Array ( [contentblocks] => Array ( [_isContentBlocks] => ) ) [alias_visible] => 1 [tv.eventArchive] => [tv.eventEnd] => 2019-11-08 11:35:22 [tv.image] => assets/media/images/2025/07/25-6/center-rotovz-vzdolzni-prerez-galerija.jpg [tv.imageAlt] => [idx] => 5 [link] => events/news/modern-ugm21-exhibition-center-on-rotovski-trg-4106/ ) Array ( [plPrefix] => [maxLimit] => 100 [page] => 1 [pageVarKey] => page [pageLimit] => 5 [element] => pdoResources [pageNavVar] => page.nav [pageCountVar] => pageCount [pageLinkScheme] => [tplPage] => @INLINE
{$pageNo}
[tplPageWrapper] => @INLINE
{$first}{$prev}{$pages}{$next}{$last}
[tplPageActive] => @INLINE
{$pageNo}
[tplPageFirst] => @INLINE
«
[tplPageLast] => @INLINE
»
[tplPagePrev] => @INLINE
«
[tplPageNext] => @INLINE
»
[tplPageSkip] => @INLINE
...
[tplPageFirstEmpty] => @INLINE [tplPageLastEmpty] => @INLINE [tplPagePrevEmpty] => @INLINE [tplPageNextEmpty] => @INLINE [cache] => [cacheTime] => 3600 [cacheAnonymous] => [ajax] => [ajaxMode] => [ajaxElemWrapper] => #pdopage [ajaxElemRows] => #pdopage .rows [ajaxElemPagination] => #pdopage .pagination [ajaxElemLink] => #pdopage .pagination a [ajaxElemMore] => #pdopage .btn-more [ajaxTplMore] => @INLINE [[%pdopage_more]] [ajaxHistory] => [setMeta] => 1 [strictMode] => 1 [request] => Array ( [q] => events/news ) [setTotal] => 1 [return] => chunks [id] => 3345 [type] => document [pagetitle] => UGM Kabinet [longtitle] => [description] => [alias] => ugm-kabinet-3031 [link_attributes] => news_3031 [published] => 1 [pub_date] => 0 [unpub_date] => 0 [parent] => 2927 [isfolder] => 1 [introtext] => The UGM Kabinet, by occasional periodic selections of works from the Collection, offers visitors a chance to get acquainted with them. The cabinet is a space, half private, half public, where one may contemplate in solitude, or a place of intellectual gathering. A collection of small treasures opens a doorway to poetic understandings of the world which surrounds us. The play of composition and a precise selection create stories of time, meaning, and passions for knowledge. The cabinet is where imagination comes to roam.

The UGM Collection contains over 5,000 artworks including all forms of visual art and representing the highlights of Slovenian fine arts. Represented in this collection are leading exponents of modern and contemporary art, particularly from the regions of Štajerska, Koroška, and Prekmurje. The collected works range from the end of the 19th century to the present. The Maribor Art Gallery (UGM) has been running the first collection of video art in Slovenia since 1999. With its systematic compilation of the most important works of prominent Slovenian video artists, the gallery has created a collection that has become a reference point in the national and international arena, being one of the most active international players in this field. In 2009, we have enlarged the photographic collection by 140 photographs from the Maribor Circle − Maribor's avant-garde group of photographers from the 1970s − and by a donation of over 900 photographs by Maribor photographer Janko Andrej Jelnikar. In 2015, Maribor Art Gallery acquired 100 works by Ivan Dvoršak with the help of the Ministry of Culture, while the remaining legacy was donated. In 2017, Stojan Kerbler donated to the gallery 100 of his own excellent black-and-white photographs mounted on fibreboard, including the famous series Pig Slaughter and Haloze Cycle. In 2017, the Ministry of Culture supported the acquisition of 100 photographs by Zora Plešnar, while the photographer donated the rest of the oeuvre without the negatives.

The UGM Collection deserves a permanent presentation that will accomplish its potential as a reference point for education, research, inspiration, socialising, and empowerment.
[richtext] => 1 [template] => 4 [menuindex] => 0 [searchable] => 1 [cacheable] => 1 [createdby] => 1 [createdon] => 1536130061 [editedby] => 1 [editedon] => 1585222574 [deleted] => 0 [deletedon] => 0 [deletedby] => 0 [publishedon] => 1536398580 [publishedby] => 1 [menutitle] => [content_dispo] => 0 [hidemenu] => 0 [class_key] => MODX\Revolution\modDocument [context_key] => web-en [content_type] => 1 [uri] => events/news/ugm-kabinet-3031/ [uri_override] => 0 [hide_children_in_tree] => 0 [show_in_tree] => 0 [properties] => Array ( [contentblocks] => Array ( [_isContentBlocks] => ) ) [alias_visible] => 1 [tv.eventArchive] => [tv.eventEnd] => 2018-06-20 12:15:27 [tv.image] => assets/media/images/2025/07/25-7/img-9695-cut2.jpg [tv.imageAlt] => [idx] => 6 [link] => events/news/ugm-kabinet-3031/ ) Array ( [plPrefix] => [maxLimit] => 100 [page] => 1 [pageVarKey] => page [pageLimit] => 5 [element] => pdoResources [pageNavVar] => page.nav [pageCountVar] => pageCount [pageLinkScheme] => [tplPage] => @INLINE
{$pageNo}
[tplPageWrapper] => @INLINE
{$first}{$prev}{$pages}{$next}{$last}
[tplPageActive] => @INLINE
{$pageNo}
[tplPageFirst] => @INLINE
«
[tplPageLast] => @INLINE
»
[tplPagePrev] => @INLINE
«
[tplPageNext] => @INLINE
»
[tplPageSkip] => @INLINE
...
[tplPageFirstEmpty] => @INLINE [tplPageLastEmpty] => @INLINE [tplPagePrevEmpty] => @INLINE [tplPageNextEmpty] => @INLINE [cache] => [cacheTime] => 3600 [cacheAnonymous] => [ajax] => [ajaxMode] => [ajaxElemWrapper] => #pdopage [ajaxElemRows] => #pdopage .rows [ajaxElemPagination] => #pdopage .pagination [ajaxElemLink] => #pdopage .pagination a [ajaxElemMore] => #pdopage .btn-more [ajaxTplMore] => @INLINE [[%pdopage_more]] [ajaxHistory] => [setMeta] => 1 [strictMode] => 1 [request] => Array ( [q] => events/news ) [setTotal] => 1 [return] => chunks [id] => 3367 [type] => document [pagetitle] => Free entry every first Sunday of the month! Maribor and Metz thus ally through artistic dialogues in different languages and in tackling different topics. The diverse artistic approaches generated from various time periods and geographical areas converge in many ways. By pursuing universal aspects of the artistic message, it erases the apparent boundaries of language, space, and time.
